Celebrate this spooky season with some spooky self care activities!
In honor of Halloween and Samhain, spend some time doing these spooky self care activities to raise up your energy while the veil between the two worlds is the thinnest.
As you respect the spirits and the world around you, these activities will make sure you’re able to also respect yourself.
Themed Paint Night
Spend an evening unwinding with your own paint night.
Do this yourself or spend some time with friends.
Creating and doing work with your hands leads to a form of a meditative trance.
I’ve been painting a lot more recently. It feels great to get out of mind and quiet my everyday stressful thoughts…
“Oh, I need to study. Ah, I have to do all of this laundry before the end of the day. But wait, I need to prepare this as well!”
With every stroke, you begin to focus more on the moment, more about the next stroke of the painting instead of the next part of your life.
Seeing everything come together, our perspectives on life can be influenced by our vision.
For instance, when we see clutter, our mind and life feel like a mess. When our environment is organized, we feel a bit more put together and in control of our lives.
So with painting, when we see our progress on canvas, it allows us to feel and notice the progress of our overall personal growth as well.
This relates heavily to what I describe as visual self care. For more information on self care elements, check out my blog post on the Eight Elements of Self Care.
Some themed paintings you can try to recreate: Step By Step Paintings
It’s no surprise to have this on the list of spooky self care activities! Carving pumpkins is a popular spooky season activity because, well, it’s tradition!
While this tradition originated in Ireland, this tradition slowly but surely became an important part of celebrating Halloween.
As the lore says, carving faces of pumpkins and placing them in front of your home protects you as it frightens away uninvited wandering spirits – the first for this tradition being “Stingy Jack” banished from both heaven and hell.
These traditions, as well as the history of Halloween and the Celtic holiday Samhain, are intriguing, and I definitely recommend learning more as part of your spooky self care celebration.
I’ve added some links that provide some great information on these histories:

Make Witches Brew (Cocktails)
Feel the magic by making some tasty potions (cocktails) for this spooky season.
Beware: While dry ice may make for a cool fog or smoke for a spooky picture, you should not ingest dry ice.
Here are some links to recipes I like:
Indulge in Fall Foods and Drinks
Pumpkin pie! Pumpkin Spice!
Indulge in some delicious and spooky foods or drinks for your spooky self care day.
If you’re up for it, you can also spend some time baking or making these delicious meals. Your house will smell amazing too!
Use Tarot or Oracle Cards
Set your intentions by using tarot or oracle cards to figure out what self care activity you should focus your energy on today.
Before you attempt to use these divination tools, I advise you to first do your research and learn about how to use these tools correctly and respectfully.
I’m still in the process of learning more about tarot card readings, so I haven’t had the chance to use these in my spiritual self care journey yet.
However, I’ve seen others use tarot cards for guidance in their lives. I recommend checking out Lavendaire’s video: Tarot for Beginners: How I Use Tarot Cards for Self Discovery & Guidance
Now, while I haven’t bought or used tarot cards yet, I have used oracle cards. For an overview of the differences, I recommend checking out Hearthwitch’s video: Tarot vs Oracle ║ The Differences | Divination
These oracle cards are created with the intention to promote self love and enhance your self care ritual.
After centering and grounding myself by clearing my thoughts, I send my intentions to the deck and draw a card for the day.
With this card, I spend the day reflecting on the activity and then celebrate myself by doing the activity.
Dress Up in Costume!
Enough said. Dress up, feel confident, and then take some cute selfies!
Admire the Stars
Appreciate the power of the universe and allow yourself to soak in some lunar energy.
Today, October 31, 2020, is a special day! The rare blue full moon is here and it definitely calls for a celebration!
The color of the moon isn’t actually blue today. The term ‘blue moon’ refers to the rare occurrence where a month houses two full moons.
With the first being on October 1st this year, this second full moon luckily graces us on the most magical day of this month!
Full moons cause our emotions to be heightened, and it is a great time to start your ‘spooky’ self care ritual with gratitude.
Even after this spooky season, the moon and stars hold celestial energy that can empower our personal energies.
Learn more about the stars, and learn more about yourself through astrology, such as horoscopes or understanding your ‘sun, moon, and rising’ star signs.
Paint Your Nails
Nail care is self care! Paint your nails with a spooky or magical style!
This activity combines creativity and overall visual self care.
You’re able to feel the relaxing moment of crafting on your nails. And after that, you have your masterpiece with you everywhere you go.
This adds a little bit of sparkle to everyday tasks.
Doing the dishes? You’ll get a quick spark of joy admiring your nails.
Paint your nails spooky themed colors (dark and maybe orange?).
And if you’re feeling up for it, try to ‘nail’ a spooky or magical design!
Plan a Fun Themed Event
This event can include the other activities on this post!
Plan an event to celebrate this spooky season and have some spooky fun with loved ones.
You can plan a scavenger hunt, or even host an online party!
Something fun my friends I have done recently is video chat with one another while watching our other friend stream as he DJ’s this virtual event!
Read Spooky Stories!
I thought about added ‘watch scary movies’ on here, but to be honest, they stress me out!
But I do still like watching them!
These activities are focused on SELF CARE, and although I do enjoy the thrill of scary movies, my rapid heartbeat is nowhere near close to feeling at peace.
However, if you enjoy watching scary movies as part of your self care activity, then by all means! Enjoy!
Instead, I like to read spooky stories for my spooky theme self care activities!
You still get that thrill but there are no jump scares!
Depending on the level of spookiness you can handle, you can easily search up some cool stories.
If you’re feeling up to some scary and creepy stories, I recommend checking out Reddit’s ‘No Sleep’ board.
You can also read some graphic novels (like manga) of some horror stories. I highly recommend checking out some of Junji Ito’s work.
I’ve also read Corpse Party and watched online streamers play the game (if you’re up for it, you should try out the game as well!)
I hope you have a Happy Halloween and Blessed Samhain!
